FAQ

A chalazion is an enlargement of the oil-producing gland in the eyelid. Unlike a stye, a chalazion develops further back on the eyelid, and does not usually hurt. They typically go away on their own within two to eight weeks. When a chalazion gets too large, however, it can put pressure on the eye and cause blurry vision. If this happens, it will be surgically removed and the incision will be closed with dissolvable stitches. 

A stye is an infection in your eyelid that causes a tender, red bump near the edge of the lid. Your ophthalmologist may prescribe an antibiotic or give you a steroid shot to clear the infection and reduce swelling. If the stye does not respond to those treatments, your eye doctor may choose to drain it.

An eyelid nevus is a benign tumor that typically appears as a thickened, darkened spot on the eyelid. Your eye doctor will likely want to photograph it to compare with future photos to track any changes in growth. Some eyelid nevi will grow during puberty. An eyelid nevus that grows very fast may be biopsed to rule out melanoma (skin cancer.) Patients will sometimes opt for cosmetic surgery if their eyelid nevus is large and unsightly. 

A corneal foreign body is any matter that is either superficially adhered to the cornea, or embedded inside it. The most common corneal foreign bodies are dust particles, metal or wood debris, paint chips, and plant materials. Surgical removal of the foreign body must be timely in order to avoid infection.
